Tewantin has that special country town connection, a sense of heritage and a reserved charm that is as comfortable as your favourite pair of jeans.
Tewantin's past includes thousands of years of Aboriginal history as the traditional home of the Gubbi Gubbi or Kabi Kabi, Dalungbara, Undumbi and Nalbo people. As white settlement extended through the area, a thriving timber industry saw timber destined for Brisbane and beyond shipped down the Noosa River to Tewantin. And so it followed that the area became known as Tewantin, place of dead wood.
The Tewantin Township was surveyed in 1871 on high ground which perfectly captured views of the Noosa River. Today Tewantin is a well serviced commercial centre. The innovative street scaping has seen this bustling CBD transformed into a pedestrian friendly precinct, with its own Town Square, Tourist Information Centre and where a war memorial stands as a lasting reminder of brave residents.
You'll find many of Noosa's sporting Clubs competing at the Tewantin Sports Complex, and Noosa's Marina complex is a short riverside stroll from main street Tewantin. The step off point for the very popular Noosa River ferry service along the river to Hastings Street, it also boasts a range of superb restaurants, and with live entertainment many nights of the week, it is proving a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
Tewantin is the gateway to a host of adventures and activities on Lakes Cooroibah and Cootharaba, the Noosa Everglades, Elanda Point and the access point for off road vehicles that enjoy beach camping on the Noosa North Shore. The (Forty Mile) beach drive is still the shortest way to visit the stunning World Heritage listed Fraser Island.
